Job Description This position will provide mental health & wellness counseling services to student-athletes dealing with mental health conditions under the guidance of the Director of Mental Health and Wellness, as well as sexual violence prevention education and general health and wellness programming.
This position will serve to assist the Director of Mental Health and Wellness with crisis stabilization in the event of an emergency related to mental health issues of a student-athlete.
Responsibilities - Schedule and provide individual counseling sessions regarding mental health, behavioral health, and emotional support needs with student-athletes of all sports, as assigned by the Director of Mental Health & Wellness.
- Coordination of campus and or community resources to assist student-athletes in managing mental health and emotional support needs. Documentation of all clinical interactions with student-athletes, and appropriate referrals to medical specialists as needed.
- Communicate directly with Head Team Physician, Sr Assoc AD of Sports Medicine & Sports Performance, Director of Mental Health & Wellness, contracted clinical psychiatrist, sport coaches, sport athletic trainers, and administration regarding ongoing management of student-athletes' emotional and behavioral needs.
- Coordinate, update, and implement the educational curriculum addressing sexual and dating violence prevention as well as general health and wellness content that meets the diverse and unique needs of the University of Tennessee student-athlete community. Focus areas will include: consent definition, healthy relationships/ boundaries, active bystander training, decision making, substance use/abuse, sleep promotion, sexual health, stress management, nutrition, illness prevention, as well as other areas as determined by the mental health and wellness staff and/or medical staff. Coordinate with campus partners to share resources and encourage participation in ongoing campus efforts, such as highlighting awareness and action during nationally recognized months, such as domestic violence awareness month, stalking awareness month, and sexual assault awareness month. All presentations, events, and initiatives should be coordinated with and communicated to the University Title IX Coordinator, the athletics department Deputy Title IX Coordinator, the Director of Mental Health & Wellness, and appropriate sports medicine staff. All education provided to student-athletes will include an evaluation to measure the effectiveness of the curriculum. Coordinate crisis intervention in communication with the Director of Mental Health and Wellness and/or Head Team Physician, for student-athletes experiencing severe or emergency mental health events with resultant safety concerns, requiring urgent stabilization/hospitalization and/or medical care.
- Coordinate pre-participation physical exam, mental health screening process, and follow-up under the direction of the Director of Mental Health and Wellness. Review complex student-athlete mental health-related case management with the Director of Mental Health.
- Complete required annual continued professional development to maintain active licensure as required by the state board.
- Communicate with the Senior Associate AD of Sports Medicine and Head Team Physician regarding major medical issues of student-athletes, such as Emergency Department transportation, hospitalizations, crisis intervention, and other significant issues.
- Other administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Mental Health & Wellness.
Qualifications Required Qualifications - Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or other mental health-related field. Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or other mental health-related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year post-graduate clinical experience in counseling, social work, psychology, or other mental health field. Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and planning to address safety concerns
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of sexual violence prevention education, psychoeducational programming and skill development, behavioral health concerns, and mental health disorders in college-age populations
- Ability to perform counseling services for multiple types and severities of mental health issues, including group presentations, individual psychotherapy sessions, family counseling, group counseling, and consultations.
- Exceptional communication and group presentation skills and ability to work effectively as a member of the Mental Health and Wellness team.
- Ability to perform accurate and timely medical record keeping for documentation of medical interventions.
Preferred Qualifications - Education: Licensed in TN, or eligible for licensure in TN within twelve (12) months under supervision, for Social Work, Psychology, or other counseling-related field.
- Experience: Experience working directly with high school or college-aged individuals for mental health and wellness counseling. Experience working directly with athletes for mental health and wellness counseling. Experience providing psychoeducation to high school or college-aged individuals. Experience providing psychoeducation regarding topics related to sexual and dating violence prevention. Experience in outreach and educational programming.
