Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Senior Transportation Engineer performs as a Design Manager (DM) and Task Manager (TM) for design activities. The incumbent may also serve as a dual hat Project Manager (PM) on some types of projects and over sight consultant contracts. The incumbent will be responsible for the management of project delivery tasks and coordination with all District functions, Headquarters Structure Design, Legal Department, and local agencies. The incumbent shall monitor and control all tasks closely to ensure timely delivery. Registration as a Professional Engineer is required for this position.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position located at 2885 S. Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled, "cubicle" office environment under natural and artificial lighting. They will be responsible for keeping the branch work area clean and project files organized for easy access; as well as ensuring that the conduct and noise levels of staff do not adversely affect the work of others. Employees will also periodically may be required to travel and work outdoors and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, or temperature extremes. When field work is involved, they are responsible for ensuring that proper safety precautions are communicated and followed by staff.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s current telework policy. While Caltrans supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate may be required to conduct business travel on behalf of the Department or commute to the headquartered location. Business travel reimbursements considers an employee’s designated Headquarters Location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

  • This position(s) require(s) a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for appointment.

    1. Describe your experience and knowledge of the Department's policies, standards, and procedures in the application of design and the project development process as it relates to the Duty Statement for this position.
    1. Discuss your experience and knowledge in preparing project documents relating to project development procedures, standards, policies, and practices.  Provide your experience in preparing Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E), preparing technical reports, memorandums, and letters.
    2. Discuss your experience leading functional work teams to successfully deliver quality assigned products on time and on schedule in a cooperative environment with effective communication.
    3. Discuss your experience in communicating with othe r agencies and local organizations, ability to develop networks, build internal and external partnerships, including other District personnel and Headquarters.  Identify your practices in planning, organizing, assigning work to others, and reviewing the work of professional staff.
